SF 153: ELECTRICIANS - HIGH VOLTAGE WORK EXEMPTION - 1997 General Session

Sponsor: Sen. Robert Peck (R-S26, Riverton)

Wyoming state law now requires most electrical installations to be performed by licensed electricians.

Liquified petroleum, gas, electric or communication facilities "...exercising their function as public utilities" are allowed to do their own electrical work.

SF 153 would have expanded this exemption to include electric utilities installing high voltage equipment.

The purpose of the bill was to accommodate electric utilities who wished to install high-voltage electric equipment beyond their meter with their own employees acting as contract employees.

Proponents of SF 153 said it was needed for continuity of work and to provide better customer service.

Opponents argued it would create unfair competition with private electrical contractors.

SF 153 failed on third reading (final passage), 13-17. An attempt to reconsider the vote failed, 6-24.

The vote listed below is the third reading (final passage) vote in the Senate.

A YES vote means the legislator favored allowing non-licensed electricians to perform high-voltage installations at electric power plants.

A NO vote means the legislator opposed allowing non-licensed electricians to perform high-voltage installations at electric power plants.
