HB 166: STATE MINIMUM WAGE - 1998 Budget/Special Session

Sponsor: Rep. Wayne Reese (D-H11, Cheyenne); co-sponsor Sen. Guy Cameron (D-S7, Cheyenne)

HB 166 proposed to raise the state minimum wage (currently $1.60 per hour) to the federal minimum wage level of $5.15 per hour.

Most jobs are covered by the federal minimum wage requirement, but any employer grossing less than $500,000 a year or not participating in interstate commerce is exempt.

Proponents argued that $1.60/hour is ludicrously low, and that there are Wyoming employers who use the exemptions to pay less than the federal minimum wage.

Opponents argued that the agriculture and tourism industries would be adversely affected by an increase in state minimum wage. HB 166 failed to get the two-thirds majority needed to introduce a non-budget bill in a budget session, 17-42 (1 excused).

The vote listed below is the House vote to introduce HB 166.

A YES vote means the legislator wished to consider raising Wyoming's minimum wage from $1.60/hour to federal minimum wage ($5.15/hour).

A NO vote means the legislator did not wish to consider raising Wyoming's minimum wage.
