SF 14 would have required individual and group health insurance policies issued in Wyoming to cover mental health illnesses to the same extent as any other physical illnesses are covered. Mental illness would have included schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar affective disorder, major depressive disorder, specific obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and autism.
Proponents of SF 14 believed it was fair and reasonable to require insurance companies to cover mental health illnesses for Wyoming citizens.
Opponents of the bill generally did not support such illness-specific requirements of insurers, feeling it might place an undue burden on insurance providers and might drive up the cost of health insurance for everyone.
The Senate defeated SF 14 on third reading (final vote), 14-16. The vote listed below is the Senate third reading vote. A YES vote means the senator wanted to require insurers in Wyoming to cover specified mental illnesses just as they cover physical illnesses. A NO vote means the senator did not want to require insurance companies to provide coverage for mental illnesses.
