HB 23: Protection Orders - Duration
2006 Budget Session
Sponsor: Rep. Monte Olsen (R-H22, Daniel); Co-sponsors Rep. David Edwards (R-H6, Douglas) and Sen. Grant Larson (R-S17, Jackson)

HB 23 would have increased the length of time protection orders could be in effect. Under current Wyoming law, protection orders may be effective for up to three months, and HB 23 would have extended that limit to up to one year. These limits apply to court ordered protection orders that are granted to victims of domestic violence and of stalking.
Once granted, protection orders could have been extended for additional one-year periods upon showing of good cause and subject to judicial review.
Supporters noted that very often, domestic violence or stalking situations that lead to a protection order remain unresolved much longer than three months, and forcing victims of stalking or domestic violence to repeatedly and frequently go through the legal process of extending the protection order is difficult and burdensome. They noted that sometimes, victims get tired of the process and simply let protection orders lapse, which may place them back into very dangerous situations.
Since the bill was not debated at all, the stance of opponents was unknown.
HB 23 was not brought up for a vote for introduction in the House.
