HB 14: Highway Patrol Troopers
2006 Budget Session
Sponsor: Joint Transportation, Highways and Military Affairs Interim Committee
HB 14 would have authorized the Wyoming Department of Transportation to hire, train and equip 20 additional highway patrol officers. The bill would have appropriated $3,734,000 from the general fund to pay for the additional troopers.
Supporters argued that the Wyoming Highway Patrol is currently understaffed, and that additional troopers are needed to achieve greater motorist compliance with highway speed limits and other laws. They maintained that hiring more highway patrol officers is the most effective and least expensive way to increase highway safety, by getting more speeders and drunk drivers off the roads.
Opponents argued against the cost of hiring the additional officers, and some were concerned with increasing the number of state employees.
HB 14 was not brought up for a vote for introduction in the House.
