Education Funding | |||||||
The Wyoming Constitution guarantees the right to an education. This guarantee reflects the founders' concern for an educated citizenry who could make the decisions necessary for successful self-government. Funding for kindergarten through high school education is now the single biggest expenditure in the State of Wyoming's budget. The amount and distribution of this money, along with the local property taxes historically dedicated to school funding, also have been the subject of several significant lawsuits over the past 30 years. To promote understanding of an issue that affects all of us in Wyoming as teachers, students, parents, employers, job-seekers, and members of a democratic society, the ESPC has compiled these publications and links to other valuable information. ESPC's first publication, " Education: Investing in Wyoming's Future," outlines the recent history of school finance litigation and the education funding issues that faced the 2002 Legislature. ESPC's second publication, " The 2002 Legislature's Progress on Education Funding," describes the 2002 Legislature's progress, or lack thereof, on the number one issue deferred from the 2002 to the 2003 Wyoming Legislature.
